New page

Ontologizing the Ontolog Body of Knowledge
Mission
Ontolog Forum is rolling out a series of events (talks and discussion sessions) between April and July 2006 that revolve around the topic: "Ontologizing the Ontolog Body of Knowledge" during which this community will explore the "what's" and "how's" to the development of a semantically interoperable application, using the improved access to the community knowledge of Ontolog as a case in point.

Purpose
* 1) Providing better access to the Body of Knowledge
* 2) Using the opportunity to explore the landscape and the state-of-the-art
for both technologies and approaches, on how this could actually be done
* 3) Employing the kinds of formal and informal semantic technologies and
ontological engineering approaches that we've been 'talking about '
* 4) Plan to develop an ontology-based application to achieve the purpose,
both as a proof of concept, and also to provide open example of a 'working
application' and the process that people can look at, and
* 5) Build up enough interest and momentum to really do it -- funded, if at
all possible, but on an open/voluntary-basis, if we have to.

Goals
* Peter P. Yim (2006.06.07): I am hoping we can engage the proponents of various approaches (OntologTaxoThesaurus, Concept Extraction & Clustering, Subject Maps, openIRIS, UIMA, Folksonomy, CUO-extension on controlled-vocabulary, ....) to showcase their solutions, using the "Ontologizing of the Ontolog Body of Knowledge" as their test case. ... Even better, come up with some ways and means to allow these methodologies to be "integrated" into something that REALLY make sense (i.e. NOT just for the sake of the exercise), and is more comprehensive than any of the individual solutions. ... I believe that is what Bob Smith, Denise Bedford, EMichaelMaximilien, Jack Park & Patrick Durusau and Pat Cassidy are all alluding to, all along. ... No one has actually taken the project on, though. This series of event, culminating in our 2006.07.23 F2F workshop, may hopefully, create that opportunity.

* (please add your own goals here too!)

Scheduled Events
* 1. Thu 13-Apr-2006: Dr. Denise Bedford from the World Bank will be our invited
speaker. Her talk is entitled: "Strategy for Developing an Ontology - First Steps." She will be sharing with us her experience from her work
in integrating the vast, multilingual data and information
resources. She will kick-off the series by proposing one strategy
on how we can approach this task of "ontologizing ontolog." Please refer to details at the session wiki page at: ConferenceCall_2006_04_13

* 2. Thu 20-Apr-2006: Dr. Denise Bedford (World Bank) moderates the
Discussion Session-1: "Framing the Issues, Design and Approach
Moderator: Denise Bedford" ... This will be a discussion session involving a panel and the
community members. Panelists will include Mr. Peter P. Yim (Ontolog/CIM3), Ms. Lisa Colvin (Genentech), Professor Bob Smith (Cal State U / Tall Tree Labs) , Mr. Patrick Heinig (EPA) and Dr. EMichaelMaximilien (IBM). ... We will be asking ourselves, "what do we want to get done in this exercise?" and to draw up our
requirements, before looking at "how it could be done", and "what
are the technology and tools available" to help us get the job done. ... Please refer to details at the session wiki page at: ConferenceCall_2006_04_20

* 3. Thu 27-Apr-2006: Mr. Jack Park (SRI) and Dr. Patrick Durusau (Chair, INCITS
Technical Committee V1) will be talking about the federation of
ontologies through subject maps. Their talk is entitled: "Avoiding Hobson's Choice In Choosing An Ontology." Jack and Patrick have a background in XTM (xml)
topic maps. Subject Maps are created from the new specification
called the TMRM -- topic maps reference model, which are,
internally and spiritually, completely different. ... Please refer to details at the session wiki page at: ConferenceCall_2006_04_27

* 4. Thu 04-May-2006: Mr. Adam Cheyer of SRI, and a Program Director of the CALO
Project, will give a talk on: "Ontology Management in CALO, a Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organizes." Adam will discuss the engineering methods we use to develop and maintain the ontology
of CALO and demonstrate IRIS, an open-source semantic desktop,
that serves as the "office environment" that integrates best with
CALO. CALO (which stands for "Cognitive Assistant that Learns and
Organizes") is a DARPA project that brings together leading
computer scientists and researchers in artificial intelligence,
