* Abstract: The manufacturing industry is evolving ever more rapidly towards the realization of a digitally driven approach based on modularization of industrial processes, internal and external collaboration, subcontracting, and offshoring. As a result, more powerful and more intelligent software solutions are being created to support all phases of the manufacturing product life cycle. In too many ways, however, this vision is thwarted through failures of interoperability. In response to these failures a group of academic and industry partners is proposing to establish the Industry Ontology Foundry (IOF) with the goal of creating a suite of high quality, non-redundant and mutually interoperable reference ontologies for the industrial domain. I will outline how the IOF came into being and what has been achieved so far, and provide examples of how the envisaged framework can provide benefits especially to small and medium-sized industrial enterprises.
3:00 - 3:30 pm: '''Track A Summary Report''' (Gary Berg-Cross)
The mission of this track was to scope out challenges, opportunities, current & emerging practices for "''Using Automation and Machine Learning to Extract Knowledge and Improve Ontologies"'' Nine speakers provided ideas. Relations with the other tracks will be discussed along with research and practical issues facing future prospects.
3:30 - 4:00 pm: '''Track B Summary Report''' (Mike Bennett and Andrea Westerinen) The mission of this track was to scope out challenges and opportunities in "Using background knowledge to improve machine learning results", the role of ontologies and comparable resources in achieving this, and the requirements for ontologies that may be used in these ways. Five speakers provided examples and insights, and there was lively discussion of the issues and ideas they raised. The sessions provided insights on the semantic, syntactic and contextual aspects of machine learning using ontologies. Relations with the themes of other tracks will be discussed, along with common ideas and opportunities.
