Ontology Summit 2021 Communiqué Workshop

Ontologies are a rich and versatile construct. They can be extracted, learned, modularized, interrelated, transformed, analyzed, and harmonized as well as developed in a formal process. This summit will explore the many kinds of ontologies and how they can be manipulated. The goal is to acquaint both current and potential users of ontologies with the possibilities for how ontologies could be used for solving problems.

Discussion

[12:15] RaviSharma: These terms and associated domain vocabularies alignment with explainability emphasize this need for cross-domain and top-down harmonization.

[12:16] RaviSharma: ken will move to conclusion

[12:25] Gary Berg-Cross: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/317078764_Nine_Principles_of_Semantic_Harmonization Semantic harmonization is the process of collating this data into a singular consistent logical view, with many approaches to harmonizing both possible and valid.

[12:35] ToddSchneider: Have to go.

[12:39] Leia D.: @Terry-- I think my presentation covered some of the discussion about how to come up with definitions in an authoritative way.

[12:43] RaviSharma: axiomatized definition - Gary

[12:55] RaviSharma: Robert to send Ken refer citation for IAOA term lists.

[12:57] RaviSharma: . The language interface e.g., using controlled English, is an important feature of modern software engineering processes

[13:00] Leia D.: I need to edit my section and still need to check internally re:review process.

[13:00] Leia D.: Sorry for not doing it yet.

[13:03] RaviSharma: Robert will send a sentence on realism.

[13:05] Leia D.: I need to go.

[13:07] RaviSharma: ). Not only uncertainties in entities (Things) are important, the strengths and affinities among relationships are also important (Sharma 2021(Feb 3)). For example, Cases in a language (4 in German, 6 in Russian, 8 in Sanskrit) can enrich drilldown of the relationship types.

[13:10] TerryLongstreth: @leia - Thanks. I wasn't present then, but I'll review your presentation. I'm somewhat suspicious of appeals to authority. It's the old argument about dictionaries being prescriptive vs. descriptive.

[13:17] RaviSharma: Ever changing formats, languages, platforms and tools also make it hard to sustain all including ontology repositories which was the topic of Ontology Summit 200.

[13:18] Gary Berg-Cross: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hlTGtea-TwXXav-QUZXXE6k5rOnec-nm/edit

[13:27] Gary Berg-Cross: Have to go.

[13:41] RaviSharma: This seems to be the 3rd draft google doc https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hlTGtea-TwXXav-QUZXXE6k5rOnec-nm/edit
