Discussion

12:17 Mike Bennett: Communique: communicates a position on the part of some community (us)
12:17 Mike Bennett: Digest: summarizes the important things we learned that want to share with the wider world.

  • 12:19 Mike Bennett: Perhaps a communique can communicate the importance of something, as distinct from a unified answer to that thing? e.g. truthmakers.
  • 12:19 Alican Tüzün: 👍

12:20 janet singer: It could communicate important questions rather than answers

  • 12:20 Mike Bennett: 👍
  • 12:22 Mike Bennett: Yes - Communique = that which was communicated. Can be questions, answers, positions, priorities - anything one might communicate.

12:25 Gary Berg-Cross: Giancarlo did not address the theoretical background of his foundational ontology UFO (Unified Foundational Ontology) which makes the point about what we need as a foundation which " aims at developing theories, methodologies and engineering tools with the goal of advancing conceptual modeling as a theoretically sound discipline but also one that has concrete and measurable practical implications."

12:31 Alican Tüzün: Some research question like this
How can the ontology community refine its understanding and practices of conceptualization, analysis, and formalization to develop higher-quality ontologies that effectively bridge the gap between representations of reality, theoretical knowledge, and practical data applications, thereby addressing persistent challenges in interoperability, explanation, and the integration of diverse modeling paradigms (e.g., common-sense, scientific, mathematical)?
and then each speakers contribution to answer this (or planned) question, which communicates to outside?

  • 12:35 Mike Bennett: 👍

12:39 Alican Tüzün: Just FYI: for Gary's project, we can also do text analysis, because we have all the transcripts of the each section.

12:39 TS: How about asking one of generative AI tools to summarize the part communiques?

12:40 Alican Tüzün: one way of using it for text analysis

12:42 TS: Gary, when did you send the AI summary?

12:44 Alex Shkotin: But next Summit is all about 20 years.

12:44 Gary Berg-Cross: I sent some summaries in October. Maybe some more in November.

12:46 Alex Shkotin: We can use ontolog-forum group for communication.

12:48 TS: Gary, found 3 emails with the summarizations, 29 and 30 October 2024.

12:48 Gary Berg-Cross: Oct. 30th I sent an email with the summaries - "theoretical background of the foundational ontology UFO (Unified Foundational Ontology), aims at developing theories, methodologies and engineering tools with the goal of advancing conceptual modeling as a theoretically sound discipline but also one that has concrete and measurable practical implications. "
12:49 Gary Berg-Cross: Oct. 30th I sent an email with the summaries -"Attached are summaries from 2008 to 2015 which I would believe will give people enough of the sense of these prior summits. Because the documents got longer and longer I had to cut and paste acceptable pieces in so there is probably less consistency here since some context is lost with smaller pieces and our summit communiques sometimes included summaries themselves which I tried to use. But I also used AI to summarize the more detailed sections so it's a little bit of a patch work. Nevertheless in the little I was able to look at in some detail there is quite a bit of relevant work on how ontologies are built and how they are evaluated which is relevant to the working topic we have for the coming year."

12:50 TS: Gary, were you not able to summarize all the past communiques?

12:52 Alex Shkotin: Let me joint later when I have something to read.

12:55 Alican Tüzün: It requires proper analysis for the synthesis

13:02 Mike Bennett: Previous Summit communiques were more in the nature of a digest anyway.

13:07 Mike Bennett: I can't make next week.

  • 13:08 Ken Baclawski: The next session will be in two weeks on 4 June 2025.
