Dr. Gabe Fierro

Dr. Gabe Fierro is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Colorado School of Mines and holds a joint appointment at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. He completed his PhD in Computer Science at UC Berkeley in 2021. His research focuses on the application of linked data technologies to long-standing issues of data management in the built environment. This has involved the development of new ontologies for these domains as well as performant query processors and reasoners which facilitate the use of linked data in data-intensive systems.

Gabe is the lead maintainer of the Brick Schema ontology project, an open-source effort to standardize metadata about data produced by and about buildings. Gabe leads the development of the Mortar platform, which contains a significant release of building system telemetry and linked data descriptions of the data sources for use in reproducible building science. He is an active participant in the development of ASHRAE's 223P standard for semantic metadata in buildings, which is using linked data technologies to capture the topology and composition of building subsystems. He is also an activity lead for the IEC Annex 81 investigation titled Data-Driven Smart Buildings which is summarizing the use of ontologies in the space and comparing their usability and efficacy in relation to traditional approaches. Gabe is a member of ACM, IEEE and ASHRAE.
