Michael Athanas

Michael is Director of Research and Development for the Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry division at ThermoFisher Scientific in San Jose California. He leads a small skunk-works research team exploring science-driven information based developments to drive and accelerate scientific research. Michael has a substantial track record in life science in both the fields of genomics and proteomics and is the author of a popular mass spectrometry analysis tools such as SIEVE and RawMeat.

Michael is the ThermoFisher representative for the Allotrope Foundation and leads the Mass Spectrometry working group. Allotrope Foundation is an international consortium of pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, and other scientific research-intensive industries that is developing advanced data architecture to transform the acquisition, exchange, and management of laboratory data throughout its complete lifecycle.

With a doctorate in Physics from Carnegie Mellon, Michael has research the fundamental structure of matter (in particular, two-photon interactions) at high-energy physics laboratories around the world. He is also an avid Ashtanga yoga practitioner and certified instructor.
