ConferenceCall_2007_05_17 Discussion: Enhancing our Event Announcement
Background
During a discussion at our 2007.05.03 call, Ken Baclawski agreed to come up with some suggestions on a design of a mail format for Ontolog news announcements.
We will be discussing this during our ConferenceCall_2007_05_17.
Existing Announcements Samples
- on Ontolog WikiHomePage - see: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WikiHomePage#nidW
- on [ontolog-invitation], our announcement listserv:
- first "Announcment" - http://ontolog.cim3.net/forum/ontolog-invitation/2007-05/msg00000.html
- "Reminder" - http://ontolog.cim3.net/forum/ontolog-invitation/2007-05/msg00001.html
- "Proceedings" on [ontolog-forum] (for archival purposes) - http://ontolog.cim3.net/forum/ontolog-forum/2007-05/msg00212.html
KenBaclawski's Suggestions
The design starts with short headlines for meetings and related conferences. The headlines should fit in the first screen, and the simple design should help maximize the impact of the message. One can navigate to the longer announcements, which have external links.
My suggested design is hard to reproduce in the wiki as it is intended for a mail reader. The mail message consists of two parts each of which has the same information. The first part is an ordinary text message with no markup. This part is appropriate for mail readers that have limited functionality. The second part has html markup with internal as well as external links. I tried the format on a couple of mail readers (pine and Netscape), and they both understood the markup with no difficulty (and only showed a single message, not two messages). Each message is subdivided into two sections. The first section has the headlines. These are very brief with just date, speaker and title. One can click on each entry to navigate within the message to the longer announcement. Given the difficulty of reproducing all of the above here in the wiki, the following example is intended just to give a rough idea of what it looks like in a mail reader. To see what the message looks like in your own mail reader, ask me to email it to you.
The example begins here:
