Discussion

12:20:57 Michael DeBellis : I don't like calling an ontology a dictionary. A dictionary IMO is best modeled in SKOS. A dictionary has little structure. An ontology for me is first and foremost a model.

12:21:41 Alex Shkotin : dictionary of application area.

12:22:27 janet singer : But a formalized dictionary that supports reasoning would have structure?

12:22:44 Alex Shkotin : exactly!

12:23:20 Gary Berg-Cross : Modern ontologies include some dictionary functions but support other semantic uses.

12:24:13 Alex Shkotin : there are a lot of ways to use terminology of application area.

12:43:49 Michael DeBellis : Re: elevator pitch, my elevator pitch is that ontologies are NOT complex, they are based on set theory and logic and we all use set theory and logic every day. I often find that non technical users pick up ontologies and Protege very quickly. I also avoid using jargon and just say an ontology is 1) the schema model for a graph database 2) A schema model that includes automatic validation and reasoning. I.e., start with things they understand first.

  • Mike Bennett : 👍

12:45:33 From Alex Shkotin : metadata is a part of Abox.

  • Michael DeBellis : It depends who you talk to. If you read things by Gartner or books like Strengholt's Enterprise Data they talk about "semantic metadata" i.e., TBox
    • Alex Shkotin : I am talking about metadata instance.
    • Michael DeBellis : 👍
