Agenda & Proceedings
1. Meeting called to order:
- Susan Turnbull took the chair and welcomed everyone
- Peter P. Yim volunteered to take minutes of the meeting
- review and adopt agenda
2. Roll Call:
- see above
3. Issues brought forward:
- postmortem of the 25-Oct-2007 session - ConferenceCall_2007_10_25
- what worked well?
- the session was excellent
- session page looks great now, with the screenshots
- what didn't?
- everyone appears under their alias in Second Life ... what can we do to improve on the 'networking' when people actually don't know each other by their aliases
- the gaming world which SL was probably first designed for, is probably not exactly for us
- we need some sort of convention about naming people
- the "JamieB Tomorrow" example (which JamieClark (James Bryce Clarke) used as his alias) was easy to recognize
- the NASA Guest "label" should work well too
- everyone appears under their alias in Second Life ... what can we do to improve on the 'networking' when people actually don't know each other by their aliases
- what are we going to do differently?
- need to clarify to people that they can get the full OKMDS series programming/content either way ('real life' or 'second life'), people just being on augmented conference call are not at all penalized
- question: are sessions being archived (or links to the archive available) at the NASA/JPL Second Life site? Would be nice if we can implement that.
- we need some sort of convention about naming people so as to help the networking
- what worked well?
4. Status of developing issues:
- Outstanding Issue Update:
- Tie down details of the 08-Nov-2007 OKMDS Launch Event
- ref. last week's discussion (Oct-25):
- (suggested) general agenda for the Nov-8 launch event:
- Opening and welcome -- Peter
- Andrew and Jeanne will set out the agenda and the questions to be discussed to maintain focus as people get used to the environment
- 5 minutes for pre-brief. This will establish the context and set the focus.
- 15 to 20 minutes to go around the room asking each person to give a short introduction (NOT a presentation!) about themselves.
- 30 to 45 minutes for the main presentation done by Andrew and Jeanne.
- 30 minutes. Open discussion. Issues that were not addressed can be registered with the chat window.
- Conclusion / Follow-up - ask people to subscribe to discussion list, and actively discuss/debate the issues
- Agreed that the 08-Nov-2007 OKMDS Launch Event would consist of three parts
- 1. Initiative Overview
- 2. First presentation of the series by Andrew and Jeanne
- 3. Review of organizing process and communication options to ensure full participation by interested individuals - how to join discussion forum, listserv cross-posting?, RSS feeds, podcasts of sessions
- suggest program content for the next 2~3 months or even the entire 6 months of the mini-series
- speaker sessions - candidate speaker, topic, date (for each)
- panel discussions - topic, chair/moderator, candidate panelists (for each)
- Suggestions:
- Peter: SOFI panel - Gordon, Glenn, Yim, Baclawski, Cassidy
- Peter: Dialog mapping - Conklin, Shum, Park et al.
- Susan: Morrison on IARPA funded research IC use of knowledge/decision environments
- Ken: "Living with Uncertainty" - panel on probabilistic reasoning and decision support
- Ken: ontology-based Dialog Planning for Relational Medicine
- Jeanne / Andy should probably have some great stuff at NASA we can draw upon
- General consensus (from participants at this call):
- stay focused on our mission - ref. mission statement: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OKMDS#nid152K
- may need to reiterate between our mission statement and the programing to make sure they align
- identify who can be speakers at the intersections (not just the domain experts)
- have people from different community vantage points comment on the experts' presentations
- identify "discussion moderators" to champion/focus on particular questions we want to investigate/explore
- online discourse - topic, moderator, candidate (invited) experts to help lead & contribute to the discussion
- Online discourse - need to clarify on the logistics and mechanics of cross-posting to [KMgov] and [okmds-convene]
- define (ultimate) deliverables of this entire mini-series
- paper(s), publications?
- wikipedia article?
- content on the website - what? how? who?
- Discussed at the last (Oct-25) call:
- Agreed that focus area champions would be conducive to fruitful discussions within and across the many pathways of exploration anticipated; the questions will also help frame the discussions
- Need to determine our deliverables and the form(s) of the anticipated outcome of this mini-seminar series ... candidates include:
- A Communique similar to what was developed by UpperOntologySummit (2006) or Ontology Summit 2007
- Scaffold for anticipated emergence of a Community of Practice
- [3 additional ideas added by Susan Turnbull when completing session notes]
- Partial answers to initial questions with associated community "confidence/ consensus / validation" ratings associated with each question -> precipitating a more refined set of questions to launch a future mini-seminar series
- Initial "start-up" scenario sketches valued by cross-boundary organizations seeking to lightly organize around shared purpose and uncertain how to proceed - Best Gleanings from the Series as a Primer
- from J. Seely Brown - Beginnings and Endings are always the most difficult.
- example from Judith Olson's decade long research summarized as Collaboration Wizard
- Prepare additional 2-3 sessions (dates, presenters, topics) to announce on Nov. 8
- Discussions:
- Susan Turnbull: note that on 16-Nov-2007, there will be a Federal Consortium for Virtual Worlds Conference. If you cannot attend the meeting physically, you can attend through Second Life at the following NOAA SLURL: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Meteora/199/138/28
- Nancy Faget did ask (a) if our friends from NASA/JPL are involved, and (b) to please try telling participants there about our OKMDS mini-series
- World Usability Day - 08-Nov-2007 too, this year's theme is Healthcare - see: http://worldusabilityday.org
- Ken: starting new project on "Dialog" in healthcare with relational agents ... will be able to report on that later
