Agenda Ideas
- announcement: [okmds-org] and [okmds-convene] lists now operational
- everyone getting message distribution properly? ... any questions?
- update on the "Second Life tutorial" and OKMDS Launch Event dates
- tie down the date/time for the two "Second Life tutorial" sessions - Mon 2007.10.22 & Thu 2007.10.25
- tie down the program for the Thu 2007.11.08 launch event
- tie down the "charter" for this OKMDS initiative
- by continuing the refinement of the first draft outlined by Jeanne Holm last week - ref: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologyKMandDecisionSupport/OrganizingCommitteeMeeting_2007_10_02#nid14N6
- Anything else that affects our announcing this initiative to both the Ontolog and KMgov communities (which we would need to do on/before end of this week (as it is less than 10 days to the first event already!)
- solicit other programing (content) ideas from members of the organizing committee
- we need to tie down dates for the next 2~3 events after the Nov-8 Launch Event, and rough idea on the programming, within the next 2 weeks, hopefully (we need to be announcing them at Nov-8 too!)
- ... (please post your agenda ideas here; identify yourself for follow-up purposes)
Agenda & Proceedings
1. Meeting called to order:
- Peter P. Yim took the chair and welcomed everyone
- Ken Baclawski volunteered to take minutes of the meeting
2. Roll Call:
- see above
3. Urgent Issues to be covered today:
4. Status of developing issues:
- Outstanding Issue and Progress Update:
- announcement: [okmds-org] and [okmds-convene] lists now operational
- The attendees confirmed that the distributions is functioning properly.
- update on the "Second Life tutorial" and OKMDS Launch Event dates
- There will only be one tutorial session to be held on Thu 2007.10.25 (regular Ontolog meeting slot - 1:30pm EDT / 10:30am PDT)
- tie down the program for the Thu 2007.11.08 launch event
- (a) announcing the initiative; (b) panel discussion given by NASA personnel
- The launch event will have a wiki page.
- The series will run for approximately 6 months during which there will be about 1000 emails, 6 to 12 panel discussions or talks, ending with some deliverables in the form of reports or communiques.
- Event suggestions should be made by using the email list.
- Discussions:
- tie down the "charter" for this OKMDS initiative
- by continuing the refinement of the first draft outlined by Jeanne Holm last week - ref: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologyKMandDecisionSupport/OrganizingCommitteeMeeting_2007_10_02#nid14N6
- References:
- Jeanne's initial draft: NASA is defining the structure of knowledge management, ontologies, and other information and data management activities, and their inter-relationship with each other. This project will open that discussion to other organizations to see if the conversation occurs in a wider space around the issues that are core to these discussions. How do we help people working with our organization to discover useful knowledge? How can we structure information for decision support (both known and serendipitious inquiry)? What are the ontologies to prioritize for scientific exchange? How does the use of semantic technologies draw these fields closer and support better knowledge discovery?
- Yes, we do have a project - an upcoming NASA-Ontolog collaboration
- it will be a virtual mini-series of virtual seminars, panel dicussions, online discourse etc.
- it will span about 6 months.
- the Theme of the initiative will be: "Ontology in Knowledge Management and Decision Support"
- the announcement and online discourse will conceivably be cross-posted to [ontolog-forum] <ontolog-forum-at-ontolog.cim3.net> and [kmgov]<kmgov-at-list.jpl.nasa.gov> (or child lists off them, depending on participation and traffic.)
- we'll consider offering all the virtual seminar and panel discussion events both in the real world setting as augmented conference calls, as well as in a virtual world setting (at "Second Life")
- Explore the intersection of Ontology and Knowledge Management disciplines to define promising collaborations between the two (Holm)
- Peter - hope to see the Ontolog mission integrated into the project mission
- Susan - want to see how virtual world (modeling & simulation) be applied to real world problems (like emergency response)
- Leo: that, i.e. modeling (& simulation) is what ontology purports to do too!
- Leo - combining all three: community (structured bottom-up), folksonomy (unstructured bottom-up) & ontology (structured top-down) approaches
- Ken - want to see "decision support" featured more prominently in the mission statement
- one might also refer to a similar writeup we used for Ontology Summit 2007 at: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2007#nidSKB
- need to assign one person to head up on the update draft and then offer back to the team via the mailing list for review and adoption (hopefully, adoption by end this week.)
- Susan Turnbull will do the next pass - Jeanne Holm and Andrew Schain will help. Everyone should review and comment on the updated draft once it hits the [okmds-org] list so we can turn it around quickly.
