Abstract
The OntologySummit is an annual series of events that involves the ontology community and communities related to each year's theme chosen for the summit. The Ontology Summit was started by Ontolog and NIST, and the program has been co-organized by Ontolog, NIST, NCOR, NCBO, IAOA, NCO_NITRD along with the co-sponsorship of other organizations that are supportive of the Summit goals and objectives.

Proceedings
[12:29] KenBaclawski: The agenda today is to propose and discuss potential topics for the Ontology Summit 2017. A second issue was raised concerning whether the sessions should continue to be on Thursdays or should move to Wednesdays.
[12:34] KenBaclawski: Ravi, there is a number in India +91 7400 130 511
[12:39] TerryLongstreth: Wednesday is my most open day, but Thursday's OK too.
[12:40] ravisharma: either day is ok
[12:41] ravisharma: wednesday ok
[12:43] ToddSchneider: Suggestion #1: Revisit Foundational Ontologies
[12:44] TerryLongstreth: Auto (or Semi-Auto)mating creation and management of Ontologies (intentions)
[12:44] Donna Fritzsche: Domain Models and Vocabularies
[12:44] ToddSchneider: Suggestion #2: Domain Vocabularies
[12:50] ToddSchneider: Suggestion #3: Domain Overlap and Vocabularies (?)
[12:51] SteveRay: Can someone provide a link to the past chatroom transcripts? I'd like to review what we already discussed.
[12:52] TerryLongstreth: I've been listening in on the BD2K (Big Data 2 Knowledge) NIH conference and one of their serious concerns is the lack of agreed terminology across Health disciplines. I know we discussed this last year, but it might bear revisiting as a cross domain ontological problem.
[12:53] ToddSchneider: Suggestion #4: AI/Hybrid Learning and Ontologies
[12:53] ravisharma: yes agree Terry
[12:53] Donna Fritzsche: agreed with #4
[12:53] ravisharma: thanks Todd
[12:54] ravisharma: what is hybrid learning?
[12:55] Donna Fritzsche: watson is an example of hybrid learning - several types of ml in one "kit" / system
[12:55] SteveRay: @Ravi: What at least I meant was hybrid systems that use machine learning systems to ingest data, combined with logic-based system that do the reasoning.
[12:55] ListenerOnly: the ontology is there it is snomed..but the issue the EMR vendors don't implement it and use proprietary terms that are usually not mapped
[12:56] ravisharma: Thanks Steve
[12:56] ToddSchneider: Ravi, hybrid learning is just the use of multiple techniques to 'learn' from 'data' and other information sources.
[12:57] Donna Fritzsche: Suggestion #5: Domain Models and Vocabularies
[12:58] ToddSchneider: Donna, See Suggestion #2
[12:58] ravisharma: What else is in hybrid over machine learning? Is it NLP+context fro terms to be used in ontologies.
[12:58] Donna Fritzsche: @todd - just making it broader in intent
[12:58] TerryLongstreth: As Harold Varmus put it, they're beginning to arrive at some SNPs that map to specific biological effects but there is no agreement on terminology for those effects.
[12:59] ravisharma: I know we can acess Steve but these are probably on new website.
[13:00] Donna Fritzsche: good points
[13:03] Donna Fritzsche: Techniques for building and extending Domain Models and Vocabularies @Andrea
[13:03] SteveRay: From my sparse notes, in October 2014 the following topics were floated:
[13:04] SteveRay: Textbook for applied ontology; The discipline of Ontological Engineering - Best Practices; Reasoning with Ontologies; Retrospective on previous summits - where are we now?
[13:06] Donna Fritzsche: Clear statements of use cases and problems
[13:06] ravisharma: the search for soaphub resulted in some chats in 2016
[13:06] ravisharma: http://ontologforum.org/index.php/Special:Search?search=soaphub
[13:07] Donna Fritzsche: @Steve - Reasoning with Ontologies is important
[13:08] Donna Fritzsche: Suggestion #6 Reasoning with Ontologies
[13:08] SteveRay: Two others related to standards: Using ontologies to evaluate standards; What can you do with an ontological representation of a standard that is impossible or inconvenient in other representations?
[13:10] ravisharma: one topic could be use of ontology as pre-processors for practicing domain solutions (operational apps)?
[13:12] KenBaclawski: @SteveRay I have tracked down the first brainstorming session for Ontology Summit 2016: http://ontologforum.org/index.php/ConferenceCall_2015_10_01
[13:12] TerryLongstreth: I've got to leave. I'll try to join next week's session.
[13:13] Donna Fritzsche: Suggestion #7 Ontological Architectures
[13:13] Donna Fritzsche: re #7: bring in international speakers - John has knowledge on techniques to possibly follow up on.
[13:14] ToddSchneider: Would it possible to 'merge' Foundational Ontologies, Domain Models/Vocabularies/Ontologies, and Ontological Architecture?
[13:16] ravisharma: Architectures for solutions in IT or info services could have ontologies embedded in them?
[13:22] KenBaclawski: One issue that has come up periodically is whether a summit should be more "outward facing" or "inward facing".
[13:23] ravisharma: Todd-Yes more wide topic than last year but may lead to solution framework.
[13:24] ravisharma: Ken - last year was both inward and outward looking as far as our community was concerned.
[13:27] Donna Fritzsche: please mute if you are not speaking
[13:27] Donna Fritzsche: I like the term solution framework Ravi
[13:28] Donna Fritzsche: Last year we also spoke about having a beginner's meeting followed by an intermediate- experts meeting - rotating week to week
[13:33] AndreaWesterinen: Sorry, but I have to leave for another meeting.
