Ontology Summit 2025 Track 4
Agenda
Elisa Kendall Industrial Ontology & Knowledge Graph Development at Scale
- Elisa Kendall will talk about implementing / standardizing large ontologies such as FIBO and IDMP, both of which are associated with very large data sets (including reference data, mapping to others, use of standard patterns for managing controlled vocabularies for mapping to such ontologies, etc.), and to answer some of the bullets in our track with respect to those examples. she will have slides that includes 10+ use cases from very large pharma companies for implementing the IDMP ontology that might make things more concrete, and demonstrate its utility.
- Bio: Ms. Kendall brings deep experience in large-scale, complex taxonomy, ontology and knowledge-based systems development, working for customers such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of the DoD, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, SRI International. She represents ontology concerns on the Object Management Group (OMG)'s Architecture Board, and is co-editor of the Ontology Definition Metamodel (ODM). She is also an active participant in the ISO JTC1 SC32 WG2 Metadata working group and was a member of the W3C OWL and Best Practices working groups. Recent projects include commercial ontology development for travel, agricultural, chemical engineering, financial services, and telecommunications applications.

Discussion
12:06 Paul Tyson: The OWL quick-reference guide is my go-to reference, I rarely need anything else. Thank you!
12:07 Ravi Sharma: Elisa kindly send your photo with Dr Soley and we will post it on website session.
12:13 Ravi Sharma: How is quantum computing relevant to ontologies?
- 12:16 John Sowa: Ravi, every subject is relevant to ontology, but quantum computing is still in the research stage.
12:22 Ravi Sharma: How is AI and Digital transformation improving such large ontologies?
12:27 John Sowa: AI won't do anything by itself. But people who develop tools for ontology might use AI techniques to make the interface more friendly and easier to read and write.
12:30 Mark Underwood: Bayer's extensive use of ontologies internally is covered here .... We reference this in draft IEEE 2957 (metadata) https://github.com/Bayer-Group/COLID-Documentation/blob/master/README.md
12:41 Todd: How is the extensibility of ontologies supported/realized?
12:44 Nancy Lawler: Any patterns for inverse and triadic relations?
12:51 John Sowa: What version of logic does it support?
12:52 John Sowa: The Object Management Group supports full Common Logic. That is essential for complex applications
13:05 Elisa Kendall: ekendall@thematix.com
13:20 John Sowa: I'll send a note to Ontolog about communication in natural language
13:23 Todd: What is ‘moiety’?
- Ken Baclawski: Here are a couple of informal definitions
- Chemistry definition: A moiety is a part of a molecule that is given a name because it is identified as a part of other molecules as well.
- Pharmacology definition: The part of a molecule responsible for the physiological or pharmacological action of a drug.
- Is there a notion like this in mereology?
13:25 Mark Underwood: Great preso, Elisa
