Mike Bennett: Apologies: Elie Abi-Lahoud
anonymous morphed into Todd Schneider
Mike Bennett: MArk's reply to Leo:
Mike Bennett: I dont see this as a problem at all, Leo. The 10th anniversary call for papers was for review articles and position papers, not for research papers. Im really glad youre doing this; AO does not get enough submissions related to the Semantic Web. Thanks for drumming up business.
Mike Bennett: Timings

Submission date July 15 (this is the date for the Anniversary Edition)
Submission
Position papers: 3 months
Longer papers: 6 months
(We would also try to solicit position papers directly from Summit 2014 participants)
Assigning Reviews

Reviews
1 month
= Total from submission deadline to Yes/No/Yes with comments
6 weeks
Rework by Authors
1 month
Final Decision
10 weeks after Deadline
(more if July / August are part of these cycles)
Example Timeline
Call goes out: Early June
Submission Deadline: 6 months = Early December (seems a bit long!)
Or
Submission Deadline: 3 months = 01 September
Notification to Authors: 15 October
Camera-ready Due: 15 November
Mike Bennett: 4 Months
Mike Bennett: Submission Deadline: 4 months = 01 October
Notification to Authors: 15 November
Camera-ready Due: 15 December
Mike Bennett: Consensus: We will do this.
Mike Bennett: Can make Camera ready date later in Dec - have everything wrapped up by end of December.
Mike Bennett: When are the issues?
Mike Bennett: BUT this is the dealdine for position papers (01 Otc) not 15 July, for the 10th Anniversary issue
Mike Bennett: StatusLast issue (10:1) online on 20 May 2015Next issue10:2 scheduled for July 2015
Mike Bennett: Therefore 10:40 would be Jan or Feb 2016
Mike Bennett: 6 months is more reasonable for a journal, compared to conference.
Mike Bennett: We do want to encourage research papers.
Mike Bennett: Submission Deadline: 6 months = 01 December
Notification to Authors: 15 January (or later if we add time for New Year?)
Camera-ready Due: 15 February
Mike Bennett: http://www.iospress.nl/journal/applied-ontology/
Mike Bennett: http://www.iossubmissions.com/applied-ontology/10thAnniversary
Mike Bennett: If we aim for after the Annivefsary Issue (assuming that is the 4th of 4 in 2015/16) then we would aim oto hit Vol 11 Issue 1 (May 2016?)
Mike Bennett: The issue before the Special Editioin would be Vol 10 Issue 3.
Mike Bennett: We still need to know the dates of the upcoming issues, and their corresponding camera-ready dates.
Mike Bennett: Goal is to get as many good papers as possible so a longer lead time would facilitate that.
Mike Bennett: Decision is to go with a 6 month submission deadline, counting from mid June.
Mike Bennett: That gives us a couple of weeks to get out the call.
Mike Bennett: Call for Papers
IAOA Journal of Applied Ontology Special Issue on the Role of Ontologies in Linked Data, Big Data and Semantic Web Applications.
The IAOA Semantic Web Applied Ontology (SWAO) Special Interest Group [ontolog-02.cim3.net] welcomes the submission of papers (minimum of xx pages) discussing the role of ontologies in the areas of Linked Data, Big Data and the Semantic Web. Our goal is to collect a diverse set of practical, methodological and research-oriented papers concerned with the use of ontologies in support of these areas, with a focus on content-specific integration and modelling issues. Expanding on the topics highlighted in the Ontology Summit 2014 Communique [ontolog.cim3.net], submissions should be concerned with:
The role that ontologies play (or can play) in Linked Data, Big Data and Semantic Web Applications
Engineering of ontologies to address integration and domain-specific modeling issues
Sharing and reuse of ontologies within and across application or domain areas
Automation and tooling in support of ontology development
Papers should be formatted and submitted according to the guidelines of the IAOA Journal of Applied Ontology [www.iaoa.org]. The guidelines are found under the tab, "Manuscript submissions & Author instructions".

Mike Bennett: Is this a wrap?
Mike Bennett: Yes.
Mike Bennett: Comments on the text:
Mike Bennett: 1. "Discussing the role" limits it to position papers.
Mike Bennett: 2. xx pages:
Mike Bennett: Previously we agreed that we would not put a formal limit on - so delete that.
Mike Bennett: Agreed that 30 pages is fine; also typical papers of 10 - 12, and also shorter position papers.
Mike Bennett: Need to re-word it to embrace both position papers and research papers. "Develop".
Mike Bennett: We should mention the relationship to the 2014 Ontloghy Aummit, however this should be indepdendent of what the submissions should be concerned with.
Mike Bennett: discussing => focusing

Mike Bennett: Content specific integration? Seems a bit contradictory to narrow it down at this point.
Mike Bennett: We don't want to narrow it down.
Mike Bennett: Remove it.

Mike Bennett: "Submissions should be concerned with the topics highlighted in the Ontology Summit 2014 Communique"
Mike Bennett: Can't be both "expanding on" and "concerned with"
Mike Bennett: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2014_Communique
Mike Bennett: From Communique:
Mike Bennett: 5.1 Recommendations (4D52)
1. Efforts to identify the values of ontologies within Big Data applications are of the highest priority, as gaps between the Big Data and Applied Ontology communities still exist. We should seek more opportunities to encourage cross-community interaction. (4D53)
2. The community should converge and adopt best practices for sharable and reusable content. (4D54)
3. Semantic Web and Big Data developers need to identify the ontology features that matter to them, i.e., those which they need in an ontology or which they need to know about an ontology when considering for reuse. (4D55)
4. Ontology developers and providers should consider the above features and attempt to: (a) design and/or refactor their ontologies and methodologies with these needs in mind, when possible, and (b) provide metadata about their ontologies that indicates their status with respect to these needs. (4D56)
5. The community should adopt the definition of standard metadata for reuse -- documentation of assumptions, requirements, scope, intent, use cases, history. Ontology repositories and other tools should support this metadata, and the addition of more applicable metadata by re-users and evaluators. (4D57)
6. Tools should be developed to better support modular ontology development, integration, and reuse. (4D5
7. A wider array of functionalities should be incorporated into tools, including support for designing, publishing, finding, understanding, visualizing, verifying, maintaining, translating, integrating ontologies on the web. (4D59)
Mike Bennett: and the
Mike Bennett: 5.2 Challenge Problems (4D5A)
We can also pose a number of challenge problems which can serve to focus and guide future collaboration among the three communities of Applied Ontology, Semantic Web (and Linked Data), and Big Data. (4D5B)
What ontologies are required by Semantic Web and Big Data applications? (4D5C)
What are the requirements for tools, services, and techniques that support ontology development within Semantic Web and Big Data applications? (4D5D)
Is scalability the fundamental challenge for using ontologies on the Web? (4D5E)
Is the design and application of ontologies on the Web fundamentally different from existing techniques? (4D5F)
What is the role of crowd-sourcing in ontology design? (4D5G)
What are the requirements for the tools, services, techniques used for designing and implementing semantic content on the Semantic Web and in Big Data applications? (4D5H)
Are we encountering new ontology engineering bottlenecks in Semantic Web and Big Data applications? (4D5I)
Can the variety problem in Big Data applications be addressed using existing techniques for semantic integration, such as ontology mappings? (4D5J)
What benchmark data sets can be used to guide future work in the integration of ontologies? (4D5K)
Mike Bennett: Executive Summary has 3 items:
Mike Bennett: (1) The role of ontologies [in these communities], (4D20)
(2) Current uses of ontologies in these communities, and (4D21)
(3) Engineering of ontologies and semantic integration. (4D22)
Mike Bennett: Why not make the Special Issue concerned with the Challenge Problems (5.2 above)
Mike Bennett: Let's use the 5.2 as a springboard - as if the end of the Communique is the call for papers.
Mike Bennett: Expanding? Or "we are looking for papers that address these challengge problems"
Mike Bennett: NExt steps:
Mike Bennett: We can handle the CfP by email in the mail list.
Mike Bennett: Use the above work as the final form.
Mike Bennett: Mike to email this into the list.
Mike Bennett: Aim to release it mid June.
