Mini-series Title: Semantic Wikis: The Wiki Way to the Semantic Web

    • Officially launch this mini-series, and outline what people could be expecting from the program. This is essentially culled from the input received from the community on our ConferenceCall_2008_09_18 planning session
    • hear from our co-chairs on (a) some background and history on Semantic Wikis, (b) some perspectives gain from SemWiki 2006 & 2008, and (c) where they feel things are going (trends, directions, future scenarios) in the semantic wiki space.
    • continue to solicit ideas and input to help enhance the program (as part of the open discussion after the prepared talks). Community members who will be at ISWC-2008 are invited and encouraged to come to the ("birds of a feather") informal semantic wiki community meeting there on Sunday 2008.10.26

Format: a 6-month mini-series comprising Talks, Panel Discussions, Online Discourse and Face-to-face Meetings.
Description & Objectives: This Semantic Wiki mini-series, co-organized by FZI Karlsruhe, Mayo Clinic, Ontolog, RPI Tetherless World Constellation and Salzburg Research, Austria, represents a collaborative effort between members from academia, research, software engineering, semantic web and ontology communities. The 6-month mini-series intends to bring together developers, administrators and users of semantic wikis, and provide a platform where they can conveniently share ideas and insights. Through a series of (mainly virtual) talks, panel discussions, online discourse and even face-to-face meetings, participants will survey the state-of-the-art in semantic wiki technology and get exposure to exemplary use cases and applications. Together, they will study trends, challenges and the outlook for semantic wikis, and explore opportunities for collaboration in this very promising technology, approach or philosophy that people has labeled "semantic wiki."

Session-2: Thu 20-Nov-2008

  • Title: Semantic Wiki Technology (1): An introduction to some of the Semantic Wiki Engines and Related Technologies
  • Abstract:
    • The purpose of this session is to get an overview and understanding of a variety of different Semantic Wiki implementations. We will have presentations from a variety of different implementations that should allow us to compare and contrast the motivating factors, models, technologies and capibilities. The primary purpose of this session is to allow people to get a good feel for different ways that Semantic Wiki capabilities have been implemented and the sort of problems that they are being built to solve.
    • Note that this session will *not* include the Semantic Mediawiki and its various extensions, as session 3 will be dedicated specifically to this purpose.
  • Description and objectives:
    • There are many different visions about what a "Semantic Wiki" is, what it can do and how it can be implemented. The objective of this session will be to share ideas and technological approaches to Semantic Wiki implementation. Each presenter will be encouraged to:
      • Describe the motivation and purpose for the creation of the implementation.
      • Describe or show novel and unique features of the particular implementation.
      • Describe how Wiki content is created and edited
      • Describe the semantic characteristics of the implementation.
      • Describe methods and formats for importing external semantic resources into the wiki, if any.
      • Describe methods and formats for exporting semantic information created in the wiki, if any.
      • Describe the tools and approaches that can be used for viewing and querying the data in the wiki.
      • Describe any semantic reasoning tools or techniques that are used in the implementation.
      • Describe, in general, the relative stability and maturity of the implementation and some of the possible directions that may be taken in future evolution.

    • 1. "LexWiki - a common model for importing, rendering and proposing revisions to ontology resources in the SemanticMediaWiki"
      • We describe why we need common model of terminological resources in the SemanticMediaWiki. We then briefly describe LexGrid, a model that has been developed to span the terminology / thesaurus / ontology boundaries and how we have implemented it in the SemanticMediaWiki environment.
    • 2. "[[BiomedGT]] - LexWiki, SemanticMediaWiki and the Biomedical Grid Terminology"
      • This presentation describes how the Semantic MediaWiki and the LexWiki toolkit are being used in the workflow and curation of the Biomedical Grid Terminology ([[BiomedGT]]).
    • 3. "WHO ICD11 Wiki - LexWiki, SemanticMediaWiki and the International Classification of Diseases"
      • This presenation describes how the LexWiki based on SemanticMediaWiki is being used for both browsing and authoring support in a World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Diseases (ICD) revision project.

      • In this talk we share our experience on integrating events and geographical information using the SemanticMediaWiki platform. The TetherlessMap extension is used to present geographical information generated by semantic query. Two applications of the extension will be introduced: 1) the RPI Map project, which displays a map and lists of integrated campus-based information, e.g., building, events, course and people; 2) the VSTO Map project, which display a map of scientific instruments, e.g. observatory locations and real-time satellite positions.
    • Christoph Lange - "Semantic Wikis for Mathematics -- a State-of-the-Art Survey"
      • Abstract: Modern mathematical research is supported by computers in many ways, but there

is still a lack of support for (web) collaboration on mathematical knowledge. In this talk, I present a short survey on (more or less) semantic wikis for managing mathematical knowledge. The challenge of agility vs. formal correctness will be of special interest. The talk concludes with an outlook into (inter)active mathematical documents and integrating them with my mathematical semantic wiki SWiM.

    • hopefully, all panelists from previous sessions can send in their visions of the future for semantic wikis, and be able to join us at the session to participate in this interesting discussion, and to answer questions as well

The face-to-face workshop at the AAAI-SS-09 would make a great concluding event for the mini-series! ... unless we either want to use session-6 as the concluding session of the virtual events, or we feel like extending the mini-series for a few more months, because there is so much more material to cover (and the interest and support is there.)
