Agenda & Proceedings

1. Meeting called to order:

  • Mike Dean took the chair and welcomed everyone
  • Peter P. Yim volunteered to take minutes of the meeting
  • review and adopt agenda

2. Roll Call:

3. Status Review and Discussion:

  • Logistics and Communications
    • given a similar theme: what/when do we discuss at the [ontology-summit] vs. [oor-forum] (and their respective settings)?
    • For Ontology Summit 2008 - for online discourse - a discussion group; for more academic issues; ends with the workshop;
    • For OOR work - a working group; to develop a repository; will continue beyond the summit;
      • suggest members only propose something they can make happen and will champion;
    • Bruce: XMDR (based on ISO 11179) on about managing data; not exactly for ontology quite yet; there is open source software for download (based on bsd license)
      • on Mike's request, Bruce responded that he will be happy to present on the work at a later meeting
    • Peter: suggest we organize a session when we can have all the major players on a panel, introduce us to their work, and their allow an open discussion for all to explore how we can align everyone's efforts.
      • Mike & All: agreed ... Peter will go ahead to organize that date: Thu 28-Feb-2008; 2 Hours starting 10:30am PST / 1:30pm EST
  • Discussions:
  • Resources and Funding:
    • Funding
      • possibilities - government agencies (NSF?, NIST?, whoever would fund open infrastructure, DARPA, IARPA (Jeff), ... etc.); EU funders; Vulcan (Mark)?; bring in W3C in a exploratory (XG) working group (e.g. Semantic Web Deployment) (although they are a funding sink rather than a funding source; but good for visibility);
      • getting organized - consider forming a sub-committee
        • we need to get a proposal together regardless - Bruce: interested to see how we could integrate the various efforts into the proposal
        • we'll discuss this over the forum a bit more, and try to come to closure by the next meeting
    • before funding is in place, work will be on volunteered basis
  • Use Cases & Requirements < -- deferred to next call
    • soliciting 'early adopter' partners who can offer up their ontologies, help refine requirements, and provide user feedback.
  • Organization & Process < -- deferred to next call
    • how shall we organize ourselves? ... sub-workgroups? how many?
    • relationship to Ontolog? sponsors? funders?
  • Deliverables:
    • target something we can "show" from this OOR effort at the Ontology Summit 2008 workshop
    • Peter / Mike: let's try to hash this out on [oor-forum]

4. New Issues:

5. Any Other Business:

6. Action items:

7. Schedule Next Meeting & Adjourn:

  • Next Meeting: possibly a time slot for regular weekly calls
  • Call adjourned at: 10:28 am PST
