8) Key Issues discussion:
- Follow-up action from Ontology Summit 2007:
- Steve / Peter: we want to do a better follow-up on the Summit outcome this year
- still seeing the Summit objectives and positions being mis-interpreted by some.
- need to properly document and communicate that to the broader community
- Leo: will ping Nicola Guarino about doing a journal paper for "Applied Ontology"
- Nicola / 2007.06.01 - "in principle there is no problem in publishing an announcement paper similar to that we published last year, of course it will undergo the usual review process. It may appear on issue 2, 2007 (issue 1 is in press right now)."
- this will be a reporting paper, separate and distinct from the academic paper (mentioned below)
- Michael Grüninger agreed to be the lead author
- Olivier: would be nice to do an academic paper ... anyone?
- Leo: I would participate, also suggesting people like Aldo Gangemi
- Deborah: I am also willing to participate in this.
- Peter Brown / 2007.05.31: I have a new researcher starting with us soon, and it might be an
- still seeing the Summit objectives and positions being mis-interpreted by some.
- Steve / Peter: we want to do a better follow-up on the Summit outcome this year
interesting project to follow up on Olivier's suggestion of an academic paper, if there are no other takers;
- Ken: good idea to do a write-up and push it to wikipedia
- brought up on 2007.05.17:
- updating the diagram to make it jive with the communique better
- Peter Brown / 2007.05.31: I will update the diagram but will only be able to devote some time to
- updating the diagram to make it jive with the communique better
that during the week starting 18th June. So far I've only had feedback from Nancy Wiegand, Jack Teller and Bob Smith and nothing since the revised diagram was done. Don't know whether to conclude that revised version is OK, or that it's not a focus of attention. I found Bob's comment particularly interesting that he has already used in twice "to explain what it is we are trying to do in an ontology project" - so it does seem to have some illustrative value, particularly in "selling" our work outside the immediate Summit and Forum...
- Peter P. Yim: also looking for a confirmation to the who was on team-Z - item skipped
- more work into the framework and associated metric
- inviting more examples of artifacts being populated into the framework
- Michael / Ken: this will almost be a prerequisite for the academic paper, since we are including some informal artifacts in the framework, example will be important to help get our point across
- and making sense of the framework population (continuing with the exercise which Denise, Olivier & Tom had started during the summit F2F sessions)
- Steve: we can use the Ontolog wiki as the workspace to get the 'population', 'wikipedia article' draft,
- Ken: I will champion the "populating" of the framework (on the Ontolog wiki) and get more input from people
- Tom: I'll champion the wikipedia paper with some consensus from this community
- note that I started something right after the summit - see: http://ontolog.cim3.net/forum/ontology-summit/2007-04/msg00182.html & OntologyDistinctions
- a retrospect on the Ontology Summit 2007 group process and dynamics - maybe at SusanTurnbull's CEW#63 on 2007.07.17
- need 1~2 speakers 30~45 muinutes, and a panel in the afternoon
- Peter: I'll help with the coordination
- Steve: I plan to attend and will chime in, but will not be the lead
- Susan: also extending an invitation for talks on Aug-14 on Mapping of science -- "visualization" and "knowledge maps" . See background links:
- Places and Spaces: Mapping Science
- [http://www.infovis.net/printMag.php?num=170&lang=2 Exploring Mapping Science, knowledge domains, and implications to

- update on the audio archive - session recordings are all posted (thanks to NIST and recent contribution from ArnoldYim) now, presentation audio segments will also be posted soon.
- scheduling an updated presentation on BillMcCarthy and GuidoGeerts' REA Ontology and ISO 15944-4, in the light of our DatabaseAndOntology perspective, and how that fares in the OntologySummit2007-Framework Population exercise.

- Bill: I'll pick Thu 2007.09.06
- synthesis of forum discussions between Feb~Apr.2007 by Pat Hayes, Chris Menzel and to be reviewed by John F. Sowa - item skipped
