- November 6-9, 2006 - Tucson, Arizona, USA - colocated with the 25th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER2006)
- we should at least make Ontolog's presence known
- Let's ping York Sure (who's on their program committee) about it when he speaks on 8/17 -- we seem to have missed that (no one seems to have brought this up at the York Sure session)
7) Current Project Status Report
- Status CctRepresentation and UblOntology project work
- Steve: some people (like EvanWallace) at NIST are working on ebXML and use of ebXML registry, they would be interested in what has been done
- Status of ProtegeKIF project work
- status of NHIN-RFI & Health-Ont project work

- ... ref. item 8 below
- UBL liaison report
- SICoP liaison report
- ONTAC liaison report
- CUO-WG liaison report
- NCOR relationship
- NIST Collaboration
8) Key Issues discussion:
- tying down the plans for a mini-series on "Database and Ontologies."
- see - DatabaseAndOntology
- Goals: what do we want to see at the end of this series?
- Adrian: a plan or roadmap, like what w3c would do, on how database and ontologies can fit together
- use cases too
- HCI (human computer interface) aspects of database and ontologies
- Matthew: use of ontology in the database design process ... or, understanding how ontology could inform the database design process
- Reference data as well
- Susie: using ontologies in databases; architecting to produce what makes sense
- Peter: produce a body of knowledge to help database professionals embrace ontologies
- Bill: a series of activities
- Marcel: interested in the issue of using other people's database, and how to correctly relay the semantics ... reengineering semantics in the data ... intended vs. actual (ontology)
- Jeff: Problems and opportunities in tying together software tools.
- Adrian: a plan or roadmap, like what w3c would do, on how database and ontologies can fit together
This might include an HCI front end, a knowledge engine, and a database backend to create ontologies requiring large scale storage. Included in this subject is the selection of a database (RDMS, O-O, XML, RDF, and hybrid). Also included are the logics required to blend ontologies with database backends. (--updated input from Jeff)

- the above pretty much covers the questions posed earlier

- Scope:
- what's in? - consensus: all of the above
- what's out? - (no one suggested we drop any of the above)
- Timing: how soon (do we start)? how long?
- start time: early Oct. 2006
- span: 6 months initially, we review to extend if need be ... we'll probably be continually adjusted
- Resources: who's in?
- manpower -
- expertise -
- funding? - is anyone tasked to do this as his/her day-job? extra funding available?
- The Plan:-
- Mission: Making More out of Ontologies and Database Together
- Adrian: how about getting the word 'Logic' in there
- Deliverables:
- The Team / Leadership:
- The initial team: Matthew (lead), Susie, Tatiana, Attila, Adrian, Peter, Leo, Chris Partridge (engineering and reuse)
- Adrian: lead candidates - Matthew: first choice, Leo: 2nd choice
- Steve: will ask around NIST, but will probably be focused on the other series (OntologyMeasurementEvaluation)
- The initial team: Matthew (lead), Susie, Tatiana, Attila, Adrian, Peter, Leo, Chris Partridge (engineering and reuse)
- Timeline / Major Milestones:
- Resources:
- Synergies with other Ontolog initiatives:
- fitting with other Ontolog series and projects

- Proposed plan for the mini-series (PeterYim / 2006.08.17 - http://ontolog.cim3.net/forum//ontolog-forum/2006-08/msg00069.html)
- 1. We'll schedule a 4 to 6 part series, over the next 3~4 months.
- 2. Candidate sessions could be something like:
- (a) An invited talk by someone who can give us an overview on
"The status quo, and what are the issues & pain points" (... need suggestion on WHO this could be!)
- (b) A panel discussion on applications and use case examples
- (c) possibly some invited expert speakers (in between the
discussion sessions), addressing specific issue(s) or subject(s) of great interest within this or this-and-related domain(s). [For this session, suggest we partially waive our open IPR policy, so that we can see some proprietary applications as well, if we can get the right people to present them.]
- (d) A panel discussion on tools -- what's available, what's on
the horizon, ...etc. [For this session, suggest we partially waive our open IPR policy, so that we can see some proprietary tools as well, if we can get the right people to present them.]
- (e) "What's Next, and What can we do as a community" that could
be of mutual interest and benefit? -- discussion on possible community projects, team-ups, ... future pursuits, suggested research problems, ... etc.
- 3. We openly discuss, make suggestions (say for speakers we'd
love to hear from, products we want to look into, applications of interest, ... etc.) over this forum (asynchronously) over the next couple of weeks.
- 4. We then get together (synchronously) on Thu 2006.08.31 at one
of the regular Ontolog weekly calls, and try to consolidate the plan and tie everything down.
- Next Steps:
- Matthew and Peter will try to do a synthesis (offline) on today's proceedings and report back to the team, with suggestions on the next step.
- (Matthew will be on holiday starting this Saturday, for a fortnight)
- in the meantime, everyone is requested to provide input via the [ontolog-forum] listserv, and/or post to the DatabaseAndOntology page or sub-page(s), as to how we can make this into a good program.
- Matthew and Peter will try to do a synthesis (offline) on today's proceedings and report back to the team, with suggestions on the next step.
