Ontolog Scheduled Discussion Session: Ontologies and Service Oriented Architecture - Thu 10-Aug-2006
- Co-Organizers / Moderator(s): Duane Nickull & RexBrooks
- Session Title : "Ontologies and Service Oriented Architecture"
Abstract / Goals of the Discussion session
- To explore what role ontologies and taxonomies play within a service oriented architecture environment. Ontologies and taxonomies can be employed in service oriented environments in numerous ways, through ontologies of domains, for instance health informatics or plastics manufacturing, or taxonomies of services or service categories within domains, so we want to explore how ontologies and taxonomies can improve the availability and performance of services in these roles. 3 guest speakers will each bring a unique perspective on the topic and speak for 10 minutes followed by a quick Q & A. After the final session, a longer group Q & A and discussion will take place among all participants in the session.
Panelists
- Ron Schmelzer (Zapthink)
- Ken Laskey (MITRE)
- Rebekah Metz (BAH)

Background
Service Oriented Archecture (SOA) is already a buzzword. The subject has been covered a few times already, in previous Ontolog session, notably:
- DuaneNickull's invited Ontolog talk entitled: "Sky Captain and the Service Oriented Architecture Reference Model of Tomorrow" he gave in February, 2005, shortly after the start of the OASIS SOA-RM TC. See: ConferenceCall_2005_02_17
- The Ontolog discussion session on "Ontological Implications of Service Oriented Architecture" moderated by BillMcCarthy (put together by BillMcCarthy & SteveRay) at: ConferenceCall_2005_06_30
- during which George Brown presented on "Enabling SOA Implementation with an Integrated Process & Technology Framework", the technology vision of which has since been proposed as the MPOSE (Manufacturing Pattern Ontology for the Extended Service Enterprise) project to the International IMS (Intelligent Manufacturing System) Research Consortium by George Brown, Mike Goul, Vasco Drecun, Steve Ray et al.
- and, just last week, during the visit by members of Ontolog to the SRI Artificial Intelligence Center, FrankMcCabe's presentation on "Service Oriented Architecture Reference Model: An Informal SOA Ontology"
To this end, Duane Nickull and Rex Brooks has put together this session to further explore the subject with a few more invited experts and the community-at-large.

Questions, Answers & Discourse
- Discussion Focus: To keep our session focused, the moderator is asking that, within reason, we try to keep our questions and discussions related to the roles of ontologies and taxonomies in SOA around the three key questions which our speakers are addressing in turn:
- How can Ontologies Help Conduct Normal Business Processes Better, Faster?
- How can Ontologies help Organizations work with Controlled Vocabularies and why is that important?
- How can Governmental Agencies (or other organizations with high priority security concerns) Ensure Vital Messages are sent to the Correct Persons or Authority Level at other Agencies or Business Partners?
- If you want to speak or have questions for the panel, we appreciate your posting them as instructed below: (please identify yourself)
- experimental: try using the queue management chat tool
- point a separate browser window (or tab) to http://webconf.soaphub.org/conf/room and enter: Room: "ontolog_20060810" & My Name: e.g. "JaneDoe"

- ... (you may also post you questions below, the moderator & panel will be fielding them during the open discussion) ...
- ... More Questions
- For those who have further questions and discussion on this topic, please post them to the ontolog forum so that we can all benefit from the discourse.
