Abstract and Thoughts on this Session

Topic: Progress Review on the OntologyBasedStandards sample projects identified at OntologySummit2009 - [ opening slides ]

The OntologySummit2009_Communique adopted on 7-Apr-2009 identified nine (9) sample projects that promise to demonstrate the advantages gained by incorporating ontology approaches when developing and applying a standard. We had a "Follow-up & Action Planning" event at our ConferenceCall_2009_05_14 and subsequent deployment of the OntologyBasedStandards wiki homepage and the [ontology-based-standards] discussion listserv. Much has gone on within each of the workgroups moving their sample projects along. It is time now for us to hear from some of the project champions, what has transpired in the last six months or so.

Here are abstracts of the briefings from our panelists:

  • "Semantics in the Financial Industry: The EDM Council Semantics Repository Progress Report"- by Mike Bennett - [ slides ]
    • Abstract: The Enterprise Data Management Council is a not for profit industry association in the financial services industry. As part of the Council's activities they have commissioned a Semantics Repository for financial securities terms and definitions, which has been built by Hypercube. This presentation describes the approach taken in developing the Semantics Repository, in order to present business concepts to domain experts in a way that enables those industry participants to complete and validate the model and agree upon consensus definitions. The presentation describes the underlying modeling framework and its relationship to the OWL and ODM standards upon which it is based. A number of extensions have been made to those standards in order to achieve business readability and further semantics precision. Finally we describe the current state of work on the Repository, which is substantially complete for tradable securities reference terms. This is now undergoing a series of industry "Proof of Concept" activities as part of the intended validation of the model and content. We also describe our plans for the future, including plans for harmonization with existing industry standards for data models and messages.

  • "Ontology Across Building, Emergency, and Energy Standards - with Open Floor Plan Display and Open Floor Plan Exchange"- by David Coggeshall & Michelle Raymond - [ slides ]
    • Abstract: The Open Floor Plan Display team has been busy with establishing a new OASIS committee for standardizing what will be called the Open Floor Plan Exchange standard (OFPX), using an ontology as the normative reference. This work is within the context of a larger activity in which an informal consortium is being established between the Golden Gate Safety Network, Carnegie Mellon University Silicon Valley, and a number of developers and practitioners in the domain of disaster response. Part of the collaboration involves the use of the floor plan information in a graduate class at Carnegie Mellon that is tackling the challenge of fire fighter tracking. Other technical progress has been somewhat on hold until the organizational tasks have been completed, but we expect that will pick up more in the coming six months, pending additional funding.

  • "Annotations and Overlays - Steps Closer to a Geospatial Semantic Web"- by Joshua Lieberman - [ slides ]
    • Abstract: Very real problems of both disjoint vocabularies and semantic heterogeneity are driving incorporation of semantic technologies into spatial data infrastructure (SDI). Reports at last week's OGC Technical Committee Meeting detailed multiple tracks of activity, in development of ontologies themselves and in use of annotation mechanisms to incorporate ontological concepts into current practice. Other efforts included profiles of geospatial services to support OWL and/or geospatial SPARQL, and overlay approaches to providing semantic mediation in existing SDI. The current focus on limited and incremental improvements is practical one, but does limit consideration of fully ontological approaches for the forseeable future.

  • "A standard ontology for Units of Measure -- Status: 8 Oct 2009" - by EdBarkmeyer - [ slides ]
    • Abstract: This is a brief report on the status of the UoM_Ontology_Standard project as of the beginning of October 2009. It identifies the elements of the program of work and the state of each of the elements. The project has agreed on target languages for representing the ontology and has an early strawman draft of the concepts from the International Vocabulary of Measurement (VIM). Requirements gathering and literature search are still ongoing, a working team has started to hammer out draft deliverables, which will be first reviewed by the group when they meet face-to-face in a full-day workshop at the end of this month (NSF, Arlington, VA, USA; 30-Oct-2009)

Ravi Sharma: David, is this what used to be called BOD's? xml documents

for each industry vertical?

Steve Ray: @David: In your cross industry focus, are you considering

including the emerging Smart Electrical Grid?

Steve Ray: David is taking the Smart Grid as an action item to go back to

the architecture council at OAGi.

Ravi Sharma: Mike, is there a Controlled Vocabulary that ties these

terms to financial industry meaning in terms of groups of data and types

of data required to execute transactions or reports? I am happy that we

are able to address financial concepts such as derivatives?

Mike Bennett: Sorry it took so long - hard to explain where we are

without revisiting the concepts.

Rex Brooks: Steve asked earlier if we have any other projects which use

ontologies in IT Standards specification, and there is an effort in

OASIS which is developing a Reference Information Model (RIM) for the

Emergency Data Exchange Language (EDXL) family of specifications.

Rex Brooks: This EDXL-RIM specification provides more abstract guidelines

for the concrete specifications in the family, such as Resource

Messaging (EDXL-RM), Hospital AVailability Exchange (EDXL-HAVE), the

Distribution Element (EDXL-DE) and the newest member of the family,

Situation Reporting (EDXL-SR) which is under development now.

Rex Brooks: There will be specifications for several of the components in

the EDXL set of standards which are used throughout the family. The

first of these component specifications is for the ValueListURN

component, and it will have an RDF Schema as well as an XML Schema, and

it will also have an OWL Ontology representation.

Mike Bennett: @Ravi: The primary brief was to provide a means to capture

business vocabulary. Having opted to use ODM we have model as well as

vocabulary, so agreed industry definitions are attached to meaningful

concepts not data elements. We plan to work with ISO 20022 (

www.iso20022.org ) to link to message generation.

Jim Rhyne: I just got dropped from the conference bridge and there is no

answer when I try to redial the main number. Anyone else have this

problem?

Steve Ray: Not me. Could you try again?

Jim Rhyne: Back now.

Ravi Sharma: Josh, the temporal, and geospatial has to be tied to some

property of interest such as spectral signature, confidence level of

feature classification, etc. do you see any progress in that direction?

Ravi Sharma: Josh, how about similar discovery service - combining

feature and phenomena related web WOS WRS etc.services using ontology?

Josh Lieberman: In a way, the topic of feature discernment criteria is

being approached sideways, by looking more explicitly at the process of

observation - distinguishing sensor models, measurement of properties,

derivation of phenomena, interpretation of features-of-interest, etc.

Josh Lieberman: Must depart, unfortunately. Hope to continue discussions

on the mailing list.

Peter P. Yim: @EdBarkmeyer and All: the Oct-30 workshop mentioned by Ed for

the UoM_Ontology_Standard team is actually going to be at NSF

(Arlington, VA, USA) ... (not Chantilly, VA where ISWC is going to be

held, right before that workshop)

Ravi Sharma: Ravi says thanks to Ed for complex integration and

presentation with speed of light.

Peter P. Yim: @DavidConnelly: the Ontolog community has a long history of

trying to influence UN/CEFACT into getting ebXML/CCTS into an

ontology-based standard ... we hope you can help us move that agenda

forward now that you are working closely with them

Ed Barkmeyer: Sidebar: scope of the units ontology *may* include

measurement concepts and/or specification concepts, but that may make

the ontology much more complex
