OpenOntologyRepository: "OOR Strategy, Tactics and Action Planning" Discussion Session - Tue 2012_12_04

This is a regular monthly OOR Team meeting. Besides covering the nominal team status review and planning, we will continue the "OOR Strategy, tactics and action planning" discussion, and pick up from where we left off at OOR/ConferenceCall_2012_12_04, but in particular, we might focus our discussion today on what we can do at the upcoming OntologySummit2013

[07:28] Peter P. Yim: Welcome to the

OpenOntologyRepository: OOR Team Conference Call - Tue 2012_12_11

session page: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OOR/ConferenceCall_2012_12_11

List of attendees: Michael Grüninger (chair), Ken Baclawski, Mike Dean, Peter P. Yim (scribe), Todd Schneider

Regrets: Leo Obrst, Bob Smith

Proceedings:

[07:28] anonymous morphed into Ken Baclawski

[07:34] Todd Schneider: What session tomorrow?

[07:36] Michael Grüninger: strawman for Ontology Summit 2013 tracks

1. Dimensions of Ontology Evaluation

- addresses notions of verification, validation, quality, ranking, ...

2. Evaluation and the Ontology Application Framework

- looks at the problem of ontology evaluation from the perspective of

the applications that use the ontologies. This Framework was one of the

outcomes of Ontology Summit 2011.

3. Best Practices in Ontological Analysis

- focuses on the ontology evaluation based on the ontology itself, such

as logical criteria (consistency, completeness, modularity) and

ontological analysis techniques (e.g. OntoClean).

4. Requirements for Ontologies

- how do we specify the requirements against which we evaluate

ontologies?

5. Lessons from Software Engineering

- what are best practices for evaluation that we can adapt,

particularly with distributed open-source software development?

[07:37] Todd Schneider: How does an ontology lifecycle differ from a system or engineering lifecycle?

[07:41] Peter P. Yim: let's ask: what does OOR has to offer, and what can OOR gain from this upcoming Summit?

[07:44] Michael Grüninger: OOR can give a presentation during one of the sessions on Best Practices

[07:47] Michael Grüninger: OOR spin -- if you want to find good ontologies, look in an OOR instance, because

OOR enforces best practices through the implementation of ontology evaluation techniques

[07:49] Michael Grüninger: Can OOR become the github and Source Forge for the ontology community?

[07:52] Mike Dean: There was a series of EON workshops on Ontology (and tool) evaluation,

e.g. http://km.aifb.kit.edu/ws/eon2006/. It might be worth reviewing their results and perhaps encouraging

some of participants (mostly in Europe) to participate in the summit.

[08:01] Michael Grüninger: Contact MariCarmenSuarezFigueroa and possibly York Sure as Track Champions

[08:02] Michael Grüninger: Also, SofiaPinto is a possibility

[08:03] Michael Grüninger: Enrico Motta

[08:11] Ken Baclawski: The sodata community wiki is at http://www.w3.org/community/sodata/

[08:27] Michael Grüninger: OOR-related hands-on event at the Symposium

[08:28] Todd Schneider: Ken, how fast can you code?

[08:39] Peter P. Yim: an audacious idea: extreme programming of "evaluation" features onto OOR

(ontohub? colore? bioportal? oor-sandbox?) culminating into a integrated demo at the symposium?

[08:44] Peter P. Yim: (as most of us would otherwise be "double-booked") we might consider not doing

standalone OOR meetings, but merging the OOR discourse into OntologySummit2013-related discussions/sessions,

while the Summit is in session. We'll try to figure this out a bit more as the Summit program becomes clearer.

[08:39] Peter P. Yim: -- session ended: 8:35am PST --

[08:40] List of attendees: Ken Baclawski, Michael Grüninger, Mike Dean, Peter P. Yim, Todd Schneider, anonymous

-- end in-session chat-transcript --

6. (Other) Action items:

  • ...

7. Any Other Business:

  • Michael Grüninger / Peter P. Yim et al. - we need to re-assess the regular timing of the OOR team meeting, in view of people's (e.g. Michael's) new academic semester schedule, and the tremendous time a lot of us will likely be putting into the Ontology Summit 2013 starting imminently, and until mid to end April 2013.
    • Let's review after the Ontology Summit 2013 program becomes clearer.
    • possibility is to merge the OOR discussion with related summit discussions

8. Schedule Next Meeting & Adjourn:

  • Next Meetings:
    • 2013_01_15 - first meeting in 2013 - Tuesday: OOR Project Team Member Conference Call - Tuesday: OOR/ConferenceCall_2013_01_15 (tentative!)
      • (as most of us would otherwise be "double-booked") we might consider not doing standalone OOR meetings, but merging the OOR discourse into OntologySummit2013-related discussions/sessions, while the Summit is in session. We'll try to figure this out a bit more as the Summit program becomes clearer.
      • note: we have decided to move the start earlier by one hour (just like today's and the last meeting) - future OOR meetings will continue to start at: 7:30am PST / 10:30am EST / 4:30pm CET / 15:30 GMT/UTC
    • ... please mark your calendars and come!
  • Call adjourned at: 8:35 am PST

notes taken by: Peter P. Yim / 2012.12.11-10:13am PST

All participants, please review and edit to enhance accuracy and granularity of the documented proceedings.
